Hiatus??

Big news, my friend: I’m taking a hiatus.

At the end of August (the 20) I realized that I really needed a hiatus from writing, at least for the rest of the month. It honestly just was draining me, and I hated everything I wrote. I kept looking at my word count, waiting until I hit 2k words for the day. I could then walk away and feel as if I had made progress.

But I eventually came to the decision that I needed a break.

I was writing garbage, and I actually didn’t want to keep with my plan of just pushing through until I got to rewrite. I hadn’t reached the midpoint (though I almost was there) and I was at 48k words. I know past 100k words is an epic, (20k-40k is a novella, 60k-100k is a novel, anything past 100k is an epic) and most publishers will not want something that long as your first book.

For those of you who don’t know, I’m writing this book in three parts, with a different POV for Part 1 and 2. During Part 2, I go back in time to the beginning of the plot and do it from someone else’s POV from across the world, and you get to see how everything that’s been going on across the world to the first character looks right up close.

That would basically mean about another 50k words, and then Part 3 to finish up the story.

Ah, no.

I know that I have a lot of words hanging around in my book that I can cut out, and slim down my book. But I don’t like how the story itself is going.

So, I managed to take exactly one week off before I had enough. I cope terribly without a project going on. (this is what happens when you’re a creative who likes to write, draw, and run a blog…)

I’m (finally) working on replotting The Storm Inside! I’m trashing basically everything, taking a few components to keep, and trying to keep with the main idea I started with for it. It’s going to be a totally new (but still slightly familiar, for those of you who have read it) story. ๐Ÿ˜‰

However!

September is my first month of grade 10 school. Since I live in Canada, that means this is my first year of high school.

*terrified screaming in the background*

I remember from last year how I had to adjust to my schedule and the level of difficulty. After a few weeks, I got the hang of it, but this year will be even more different for me. I have my core courses split between semesters, and I’m doing all my classes online. Before I did a couple (like 2) so this is a HUGE difference for me.

I am taking a blogging hiatus during September. This is because of three reasons:

  1. I need to settle into my new schedule and level of hardness of work
  2. I won’t have much free time (since I’ll still be figuring out my schedule)
  3. I want to spend that free time on writing and/or a secret project (which was also started after my break)

And yes, I actually do need to do this! I almost forgot to post today. ๐Ÿ˜–

So blogging is being shoved to the back burner for now. I promise I’ll come back in October! I’m looking forward to throwing a bunch of free content in your face again, and I hope you are too! ๐Ÿ˜œ If I manage to get a grip on high school, then maybe I will be able to post again during September, but probably not.

Are you looking forward to October?

Do you ever take breaks from writing?

What grade are you going into this year?

And do you ever draw fanart for yourself? (Can I see some? ๐Ÿ˜œ)

  1. Best of luck, Julia! I also took a long hiatus from everything online so it’s nice to see I’m not the only one who needs to take a break once in a while. Best of luck and hope School doesn’t get too much for you ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thanks, Maria! Gonna be honest, it’s actually pretty nice not to have to worry about it. But I’ve also written two drafts for some pretty awesome posts, and I can’t wait to start helping writers again! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Thanks! Me too, haha.

  2. Good luck with starting highschool and getting comfortable with all the class changes and everything! I can imagine it’s always really overwhelming to start right?! Eep. And YES I definitely take writing breaks. Not usually in the middle of a manuscript? I’ll push on…but it’ll always be garbage so ๐Ÿ˜‚ you’re doing the right thing listening to your muse and gut and focusing on getting sorted with school first! I hope you have more time to write later in October. ๐Ÿ’›

  3. Even though I’m sad I won’t be able to read your FABULOUS posts, I’m happy you’re taking a hiatus! Sometimes life can be busy, and we all need a break. *is impressed with her level of deepness*
I’m also going into 10th grade!! We can freak out together!! Even though it’s my second year of high school, it’s the year where colleges start to care about what you do and that stresses me out because I still feel like a kindergartener sometimes- definitely NOT supposed to be worrying about college. ๐Ÿ˜‚
Also… I do draw fan art! I drew a picture of one of my characters and I WAS SO PROUD because it looks exactly how I wanted her to look like. (Except I can’t draw boys. It never works. ๐Ÿ˜‚)
    See you in October!! ๐Ÿ˜

    1. Awww, thanks! Yeah, lots of freaking out. I spent half the time thinking, “Oh, I got this,” but more and more of the time I’m just mentally running around screaming with my head on fire.
      So graceful.
Oooooh, I hope you show us your art on your blog sometime! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Don’t worry, I can’t draw boys either. I managed to do SOMETHING with some hair this past summer so that he looked at least slightly different from the rest of the boys I draw, but that’s the best I’ve ever done. ๐Ÿ˜‚
