Author Interview with Kellyn Roth

Hey there!

Yes, that’s right! We get to do another interview! 😄

Today, I get to talk to Kellyn Roth, a self-published author! (I did a post on her cover reveal. Click HERE and check it out quickly!) She’s going to be launching her newest book (again, mentioned in this here post) and is having a launch tour!

Hi Kellyn! Thanks so much for the interview. 

Thank you so much for having me, Julia! *dances like a chicken with the head of a monkey*

So, let’s jump straight to the interesting stuff: your book! Where did you first get the idea for it?

What made you want to use this idea? 

The novel came together the way it was just because … it did! This was the easiest book I’ve ever written, mostly because I was just so pumped to get it down, and it just spilled out from beneath my fingers! I think the biggest thing that inspired me was introducing some new characters that are dear to my heart, writing my darling Alice as an adult, and finally getting out a romance – which is a genre I really enjoy!

Did you plot it at all? If so, was it difficult to do that?

What was the hardest part in writing this book? The easiest?

The hardest part for me is usually the ending, but for At Her Fingertips, the ending kinda just flowed. (The last page or so was especially easy … I can’t wait to share it with y’all!) It’s hard to get all the little details wrapped up in a satisfying resolution. The easiest is probably the beginning! Usually I spend a lot more time working on the first couple chapters of the book when I’m outlining and then kinda fade as I’m outlining the ending, so that’s probably the reason why. (This is why I have so many unfinished projects!)

Who would you say is your favorite character in the book?

Peter Strauss! An American reporter and author who just happens to be the sweetest being on the planet. He’s fun and easy to write, and he’s just such a gentleman. I’ve probably idealized him a bit – he does have faults, after all – but he is just the best.

Kirk’s feelings lingered somewhere between excited and nervous as the carriage left the train station behind and began the drive back to Pearlbelle Park. He didn’t doubt he could do his job—he doubted he could maintain a calm face when he met her again, after all these years.

How had she changed? She was almost eighteen now. That was quite different from twelve, especially in a woman. Did she remember him—and furthermore, did she remember him fondly? Of course she did. He’d bet his life on it.

He wasn’t willing to think about the class difference between them. After all, if it hadn’t mattered to her then, why should it matter to her now? Still, it nipped at the back of his mind like a badly-behaved puppy, demanding attention he had no wish to give.

Mr. Knight cleared his throat, and Kirk jerked his gaze from the window to his employer’s face. “When we arrive, I want to introduce you to the staff before you leave for the day. I won’t need you again until tomorrow, when I’d like to ride around the estate. I know you’re familiar with the land, but it won’t hurt for you to become better-accustomed to it. We’ll have plenty of business to discuss.”

Kirk nodded. He kept his hands on his thighs, gripping the legs of his trousers, and stared straight ahead of him, barely hearing Mr. Knight’s words. If he was  honest with himself, he’d admit that not listening to his employer’s agenda for the next few days was a bad idea, but could Mr. Knight, knowing Alice as he did, really blame him for thinking only of—

The carriage jerked over a rut, snapping Kirk out of his reverie and Mr. Knight out of his train of thought.

“That’s another thing—I need to have this road graded. Could you write that down for me, Manning?”

“Of course.” Kirk pulled out a small notebook and scribbled it down next to ‘Johnson’s farm,’ ‘Peregrine’s colt,’ and ‘fence reparation between Wall’s and Kennedy’s.’

He’d learned while getting reacquainted with Mr. Knight and his methods in London over the last fortnight that it was good to have something to write on with him at all times. Mr. Knight had a brain that worked just like a semicolon; he was forever remembering something new that needed doing and asking Kirk to write it down.

Honestly, he was enjoying himself. After years of boarding school and then college, he felt ready to be out in the world, doing something useful that could provide for his mother and sister. Especially now that they were alone.

For a moment, grief overpowered him. Jim Manning had been a good father. But, though Kirk missed him, he was also glad the man no longer had to suffer.

The gates opened to the long drive of Pearlbelle Park, allowing the carriage to roll through. Mr. Knight glanced out the window and shouted for the carriage to halt. The horses jerked up, and Mr. Knight stepped out. Kirk sat with paper and pencil stub still in his hand. Why had they stopped?

Did you have to format the book at all? How do you even format one? (Or would that have to have an entire post to itself? 😛)
